Making Money Program

People don’t need reporting to realize the following FIVE things that will always happen in the world in general and America in particular:

1. Wars to drain the national treasury to a chosen few defense contractors and the politicians sponsored by them (Blackwater, Haliburton, Boeing, Raytheon, etc.)

2. Bailouts to Banks to keep them on top in society and the jackboot of crushing economic pain and suffering on the necks of everyone else (Goldman Sachs, AIG, BOA, Citi-Group)

3. “AUSTERITY MEASURES” meant to keep the masses poor and powerless and therefore subject to the whims of the powerful (Cat-Food Commission to cut Social Security, cuts in social services, cutting off of unemployment insurance to 99ers, defunding public education, raising fees for passports, state issued IDs, property taxes, etc.,)

4. Grotesque and inhuman military, law enforcement, and police state security measures to quell any sense of rebellion to the status quo set by the power elite (Spying, harassing, and raiding the homes of anti war protestors without probable cause, Patriot Act, Military Commissions Act, Enemy Combatants, Extraordinary Rendention by rogue CIA, Summary executions without charge or trial via Predator Drone Attacks, police brutality at the state and local level, barbaric, Roman Colisseum style gov’t and privately run American prisons, etc.,)

5. Distracting people from all of the above national plagues by stuffing their empty heads with garbage such as reality TV, Jerry Springer, celebrity gossip that has no bearing on American life at large, and feeding them the empty promises of riches and fame beyond their own limited imaginations if only they would continue to support the corrupt, rotten, and disgraceful political, economic and social systems put in place by the rich and powerful elites of this country that are oppressing the masses in the first place.

Need any more be said about “THIRD WORLD AMERICA”????????????

I've been wondering about this for awhile. The GOP-allied groups have spent millions and millions and millions on t.v., but do they know how to turn out voters? That's unclear. I know how sophisticated the operation on the Democratic side is. In mid-term elections particulary, effective GOTV really matters. The Los Angeles Times thinks the Democrats have an advantage here -- and I think so, too:

With money and momentum on their side, Republicans are considered competitive in dozens of districts once thought to be out of reach. But races are tightening, and the voter mobilization program could determine whether the election provides better than average midterm gains for the GOP.

"There is a sense now that Republicans may not be able to capitalize on the backlash against Obama and the Democrats because they lack the well-organized voter ID and get-out-the-vote effort that they have had in the past," said Lawrence Jacobs, a University of Minnesota political scientist who has been comparing the ground game of both parties. There is enormous variation now state to state, he said.

Democrats and allied groups are spending most of their $200-million political budgets in the largely invisible effort to turn out sympathetic voters.

The party was shocked to lose control of the House in 1994 in the so-called Gingrich Revolution. Since then, Democrats and labor have emphasized personal voter contact to win close races. In Pennsylvania last week, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said his organization planned to "touch" every union member in the state 25 times with mail, phone calls and personal visits in the campaign's final weeks.
Meanwhile, there's no trust among the right-wing groups. In some places, they're not sharing lists.

With so much money being spent, pundits and politicos overlooked the failings of the RNC and the efforts by Rove and others to bypass that organization. But, the RNC was the hub of GOTV -- and now it's not:
For the GOP, this year's patchwork approach is a dramatic departure from the last decade, when a single well-organized entity — the Republican National Committee — ran sophisticated voter mobilization programs that were years in the making. But the RNC has faltered in funding and organization recently, and outside groups have stepped up efforts, many of them starting only recently.
If you want to help with GOTV, PCCC has "Call out the Vote" and MoveOn has a call from home program, too.

Kids Making Money

First the sheer stupidity of the story with a busy body mom straight out of central casting worrying about her kids and trying to educate people on the horrors of hazing. Please, start with your kids and educate, educate, educate.

I understand the zero-tolerance policy in effect in Carmel, but if you or your community can't figure out a way to handle hazing behavior then keep working with the kids and stop looking for excuses elsewhere. It's as if the mom was saying,  if we can't figure it out then no one else can, therefore everyone must adhere to our restrictions.

How about a little context? Wearing pink backpacks sits several miles on the other side of the coninuum from the graphic assault that took place on a Carmel school bus. In fact, I'm not sure how what happened on that bus is even classified as an example of hazing as opposed to what it actually was -- assault.

Plus, Roy Hibbert isn't intimidating anyone here. He is introducing the new guys on the team to a little harmless adversity which gives everyone on the team a chance to see how the new guys react. But... wait...I'm not going to waste time defending Hibbert's action since any sane person understands the harmless, team-building impact Roy was looking for.

I'm more exercised by the report itself.

What exactly were the folks at Fox 59 thinking? The poor cub reporter they sent down to try to get quotes from the Pacers had to feel emasculated asking these questions. Notice Jim O'Brien wasn't in the piece. That's because JOB stared a hole through the kid while he was asking and then told him he had nothing to say.

Talk about hazing. That reporter has a good case against his bosses at 59 for making him cover that ridiculous storyline.

The other angle that kills me with this story is that it remains open season on the Pacers. This guy didn't ask around to the other local teams about their initiation...er, hazing rituals. In fact, Peyton Manning claims not to engage in rookie hazing but we do know he likes to pull pranks.

Ah, pranks. Now that's a solid euphemism for hazing. Just ask Jay Cutler who Manning famously "pranked" at the Pro Bowl last year. Also seem to remember Manning having some coaches golf carts set afloat in a lake at Rose Hulman during training camp.

Would anyone at 59 ever consider heading out to the Colts' complex to question the team? Was there someone in charge pushing this story? More importantly, was there no one in charge questioning this story?

I guess any chance to take a shot at the Pacers is easy pickings. I'm surprised they didn't find someone to complain that CIB money was used to buy the backpacks.

Honestly, such a ludicrous claim would've fit in perfectly with this ridiculous story.

Here's a piece from MSNBC that says students and parents are starting to consider the cost of colleges and make adjustments:

College-bound students clearly are factoring cost more heavily into their school choices, sometimes after having tough conversations with their parents. They are shifting from private to public colleges, taking "gap years" after high school to save money or attending school part-time while working, based on enrollment figures and anecdotal evidence from admissions counselors and other experts.

I don't see this as a bad trend. In fact, I think it's a good thing. In all other areas of life we compare costs versus value, so why not in selecting a strategy for getting a college degree?

There's really nothing new for me to say about how I think people should approach the college planning decision. If you want to read my opinion, check out How to Make the Most of a College Degree.

Many of you may be wondering why I've been spending so much time lately posting on college-related issues. There are several reasons:

  • I find the subject fascinating -- especially as people start to really evaluate it and compare costs versus benefits.

  • I simply love the Debt-Free U book and have found it to be full of great things to post on.

  • My kids are close to getting into high school -- the time our family needs to start thinking about setting them up for college success.

  • Many parents are in the middle of making college choices for kids (or at least considering colleges) at this time of year.

I hope you are enjoying learning more about the college education process. I know I am!!!! ;-)

Making Money on Internet

Google’s recent push into tablets and mobile, along with offering new search services such as Google Instant, are pushing up the company’s capital expenditures, which are slotted to grow almost 184 percent in 2010 compared to last year. Next year, that amount is going to go even higher. This spending is a good thing, because it allows Google to leverage its inherent advantage: infrastructure.

A few years ago, I noted in a post that infrastructure was Google’s key competitive advantage. It’s what allowed the company to innovate and outpace its rivals. It allowed the company to give us results faster than our broadband connections could offer, making us more subservient to its search in the process. In the end, we all forgot the directories and instead focused on the search-box as the start of our Internet journey. Today, Google is a gigantic, $7.3-billion-in-quarterly-sales business.

One thing Google knows: It needs to keep spending money on this infrastructure in order to stay competitive and current. The company recently introduced Google Instant, a new feature that allows you to get results even as you’re still typing the search term. It’s a service akin to the days when an Intel chip got multimedia extensions.

In many ways, Google Instant demonstrates the evolution of a product in order to keep up with times; today’s faster broadband means that the search results need to come up faster than one could type. More importantly, Google Instant is a search product optimized for a brave new world where the user interface is touch rather than keyboards, and devices aren’t your classic computer, but instead mobile and tablet-like.

One of the reasons Google was able to launch Google Instant is because it can afford to spend a lot of money on its infrastructure. During the third quarter of 2010, the company spent nearly $757 million, the highest amount since the first quarter of 2008, according to investment bank J.P. Morgan. (In comparison, Google spent a total of $810 million on capital expenditures in all of 2009.) In a conference call with Wall Street yesterday, Google VP Jonathan Rosenberg told the analyst community:

From a revenue standpoint, its impact has been very minimal; and from a resource standpoint, it’s actually pretty expensive. So why did we do it? Well, we believe from a user standpoint, Instant is outstanding and the data that we are seeing actually bears this out.

Google’s spending on capital expenditures (mostly on data centers) had been on a decline. That is about to change. According to J.P. Morgan, the company is going to spend $2.3 billion on capital expenses in 2010 versus $810 million last year. For next year, the investment bank  is forecasting $3.2 billion in capital spending.

Some Wall Street analysts are going to view this increased spending and wring their hands. They’re idiots and short-term thinkers. I see the growth in capital expenses as a sign of health, and that things are going well for Google –actually, really well.

Let me explain; until recently, Google had to focus on a small subset of actions to satisfy its end customers – all of us – and thus make money off of advertising. Throw in YouTube videos and Gmail, if you want, but browser-based search and search-based advertising were its bread and butter.

Google is said to be the single biggest source of traffic on many of the world’s networks and that’s with only a handful of offerings. Now imagine how big Google will be as a percentage of the source of Internet traffic once we start taking their new initiatives into account. That also explains why they need to build their own networks and lay their own fiber pipes.

Now the number of consumer interactions has grown multifold. Google’s Android mobile operating system is an Internet-enabled OS peppered with Google services that are used more frequently because we have access to them in our pockets. This overall growth in data center capabilities is only going to go up as the company becomes more successful with its Android push. By spending on data centers and networks, what Google is ensuring is that Google Android will always have a great user experience. Remember, in a world dominated by cloud clients, nothing matters more than instant access to various Internet services.

Mobile application analytics company Flurry collected data from top iOS social networking and social gaming applications and found that in-app purchases — which encompass virtual good sales and app upgrades — are generating eight times the revenue of mobile advertisements.

A look at the chart below shows that for the month of September, the average monthly advertising revenue is roughly $1 per app user. For virtual good sales, however, the revenue per user is closer to $8.

Flurry data also highlights that, as of February, mobile advertising revenue per user has remained flat, while in-app purchases are trending upward. “During 2010 … revenue increasingly shifts from advertising to virtual goods sales until reaching a proportion of more than 80% from virtual goods,” according to the report.

Comparison data from Androidclass="blippr-nobr">Android devices is non-existent because the class='blippr-nobr'>Android Marketclass="blippr-nobr">Android Market does not yet support in-app purchases, a potential huge shortcoming of Googleclass="blippr-nobr">Google’s mobile app store if the iOS data is reflective of app user interests. Apple, on the other hand, has allowed in-app purchases since the release of iPhone 3.0 OS in mid-2009.

At the time, class='blippr-nobr'>Mashableclass="blippr-nobr">Mashable’s Ben Parr predicted, “The iPhone 3.0 OS could be transformational. Flurry’s data represents just a slice of the iOS picture, but we believe the study’s takeaways to be sound. When application makers build compelling game experiences, users will spend money to upgrade their experience — it’s the same money-making model we already know works on the web.

Ways of Making Money

Social games are the rage these days, but making money from them isn’t easy. Gamers play these titles for free, but Adknowledge is figuring out how game publishers can wind up making money from 100 percent of the players.

Adknowledge’s Burlingame, Calif.-based Super Rewards subsidiary is launching a three-part system for making money from virtual currency in games. That could help boost the engagement of players in social games and help raise the revenue generated from each user, said Adknowledge chief executive Scott Lynn. Adknowledge can offer this money-making system as a one-stop shop for publishers and game advertisers.

The three elements include an in-game overlay, offer banners, and a new offer wall for online game publishers. Adknowledge claims the new platform improves the experience for users and increases the number of paying users in a game. Adknowledge is one of a number of companies that give users the option of accepting special offers in lieu of payment for an online game. You can accept an offer such as signing up for a Netflix subscription in return for virtual currency in a game.

But results show that roughly 75 percent of players do not use offers. Super Rewards can target those missing the offers with an in-game overlay, which brings a single, high-value offer to users within a game. The overlay shows up at strategic moments in a game, such as after the initial load. The offers can include promotional language such as “Get More Coins.”

The offer banner uses the space around the main game landscape, presenting a mini version of an offer wall during game play. Users can pay for virtual items at the moment with direct payment methods.

Publishers using the three-part system include The Broth, whose Facebook game Barn Buddy saw its revenue increase 25 percent after using the new system for just five days, said Broth chief executive Markus Weichselbaum. Other publishers have seen a 45 percent increase in the number of new paying users. Adknowledge said developers have seen a 40-percent increase in the number of first-time payers. Super Rewards’ rivals include TrialPay and Offerpal.

Adknowledge has more than 300 employees and $300 million in revenue, making it the largest privately owned internet advertising network. It was founded in 2004 and has grown through acquisitions. The company has raised $48 million in funding from Technology Crossover Ventures.

There is an impression, widespread and generally accurate, that America is changing. And that impression creates uncertainty, and uncertainty generates fear. The issue is whether our fears are justified.

We are becoming more Latin, Asian, and African-American. White Christians are less dominant. Increasing ethnic diversity changes culture. Movies, music, literature, education, all adapt to reflect a changing society.

International corporations increasingly condition and determine our economy. The U.S. government cannot guarantee American jobs. Jobs go where the money goes. Pass a law that prevents companies from making things elsewhere and the companies will simply relocate. Traditional monetary and fiscal policies don't work anymore as they used to.

All of us Americans are dramatically affected by all this. Seeing your country change around you in ways that neither you nor your elected representatives can prevent is frightening, especially if you are older, white, and conservative by nature. You blame those in power -- the "elites" -- for not stopping this. Find a villain. How about a black president who must be a Muslim born somewhere else. You are frightened, and frightened people easily and naturally become angry people. A century ago we called these Americans "populists". Now they call themselves the "tea party."

Unless you believe these cultural, social, and economic trends can be reversed, that we can somehow magically return to the 1950s of happy days, ways must be found for our nation to absorb these changes and make them "American" as we have during past waves of immigration and cultural diversity. The magic of America exists in this unique capacity to absorb difference and make it come out American.

In the meantime, older, white, conservative Americans should be listened to with respect and encouraged to overcome their fears. It is a law of nature that generations must move on. In a decade or so we will all look back (including me, I hope) on this period as yet another era of transition where the magic of America adjusted to change and made us better. And less afraid.

Right... we all know what e-bay is, how it works, what it does, and how it has affected the internet, and the world. E-bay is the biggest online auction site on the internet, so surly there has to be ways of making money on it without selling your beloved goods. Well... there is! This fantastic method is known as GNU. The GNU General Public License is a free, copy left license for software and other kinds of works.

What all of this means, is that there is software out there, which you can simply find by visiting a search engine such as Google or ask and search for "GNU Software" - and what's even better, all of this software is copyright free, so how can you use this to make money.

People look on e-bay every day for games, programs such as Microsoft word or office, so what better way to use e-bay than provide people with exactly this. While the GNU license does not allow you to sell its products, it does allow you to sell the information you have research on these products, meaning you are selling the time and effort it has taken you to find out about the product at hand, and provide people with a link to download said product.

So what's the next step?

If you can create an e-bay listing, then say hello to your new path of income! So here's what to do, your first step is to do a bit of research and find a few GNU products that you like, and that you think other people will need, a few I would recommend, that I have sold myself in the past are - "Open Office" and "VLCPlayer" these products are a more effective remake of Microsoft Office and Windows Media Player. The next step is to create your listing, remember you're looking to sell a product, so make the product sound amazing, spend a fair bit of time on it, as you can save this listing and keep selling the same product over and over again. Set a fair buy it now price, the most commonly used price for GNU products is £1.99 though a low price, it soon mounts up as you watch the sales come in.

Finally, when creating your E-Bay listing, have a look around at other people's listings you will find them with keywords such as "Open Office", and make sure you have this notice at the bottom of your listing and I guarantee you will never have your product removed from E-Bay.

Note to eBay Staff: We are authorized to distribute this software under GNU General Public License (GPL).
